Recent research published in Nature Neuroscience highlights the potential contribution of two common household chemicals—quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and organophosphate flame retardants—to the development of neurological disorders like autism and multiple sclerosis. These chemicals, regularly found in household products used in homes, workplaces, and public spaces, have raised concerns due to their adverse effects on human health.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), prevalent in disinfectants, body washes, and shampoos, have been linked to the death of brain cells responsible for nerve cell protection. Their widespread use in cleaning products poses significant occupational hazards, particularly in workplaces where exposure is common across various industries such as healthcare, food service, and cleaning services. Despite their role in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, indiscriminate use of QACs without elevated infection risks can pose health risks to workers, including contact dermatitis, asthma exacerbation, eye and mucous membrane injuries, and gastrointestinal injuries according to research from Mount Sinai.

Similarly, organophosphate flame retardants, found in electronics, furniture, and building materials, have been associated with hindering the maturation of oligodendrocytes—brain cells essential for neurological function. Disrupted production of these cells is linked to neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis, highlighting a potential risk factor for such disorders.

In light of these findings, researchers emphasize the importance of informed decisions regarding chemical exposure regulation to protect human health. This is especially critical as increased disinfectant use during the COVID-19 pandemic coincides with rising rates of neurological disorders. Employers and workers are advised to implement measures to minimize exposure, including using disinfectants only when necessary, opting for safer alternatives, and practicing safe work procedures. Additionally, prompt medical evaluation is recommended for individuals experiencing symptoms potentially related to chemical exposure, with an emphasis on thorough diagnosis and appropriate treatment to mitigate occupational health risks.

WORKPLACE HAZARDS
Be Safe and Enjoy the Solar Eclipse.

Solar Eclipse Space GIF by BBC America

The upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, presents not only a celestial spectacle but also potential hazards for outdoor workers. This rare event coincides with the solar maximum, promising a captivating view of the corona and other solar phenomena. However, concerns arise not from the eclipse itself but from the anticipated influx of tourists, which may strain local infrastructure and emergency services. Reflecting on past eclipses, officials are proactive in planning for potential disruptions, including traffic congestion. Workplace safety guidelines emphasize the importance of protecting outdoor workers eyes from direct sun exposure during the eclipse.

Employers are being advised to:

  1. Adjust schedules and breaks around the eclipse

  2. Provide appropriate eyewear and eye damage concerns

  3. Educate workers about the risks such as an increase in unusual and increased traffic, what do to in an emergency situation, and safe areas to observe the eclipse

  4. Ensure everyone is wearing high visibility clothing and make sure the worksite is properly lit.

By prioritizing safety measures, workplaces can ensure a safe environment amidst the excitement of the 2024 solar eclipse.

STATES
New Changes Dawn on Arizona.

phoenix arizona GIF

The City of Phoenix recently passed a groundbreaking ordinance aimed at safeguarding outdoor workers from the hazards of extreme heat. Championed by leaders of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH), the ordinance is hailed as a crucial initial measure to protect workers employed by city contractors. It covers outdoor workers in various sectors, including construction, engineering, and airport services, responding to the urgent need for protections against scorching temperatures.

The decision to implement this ordinance follows a concerted effort by labor and community organizations, such as SEIU and UNITE HERE Local 11, reflecting a collaborative approach to address heat-related risks. Phoenix's extreme climate, marked by a record-breaking streak of days with temperatures exceeding 110 degrees in 2023, underscores the urgency of such measures. The ordinance mandates provisions for rest, shade, and water access, along with training on recognizing and preventing heat-related illnesses for outdoor workers. Additionally, contractors must develop and maintain heat safety plans to ensure compliance.

Size Doesn’t Matter

Arizona's Industrial Commission, which oversees workplace safety, is reconsidering its practice of granting automatic fines reductions to small companies involved in workplace accidents. This shift follows an ABC15 investigation revealing disparities in fine reductions based on company size. The investigation highlighted cases like Pete Reveles' tragic death at a cattle ranch, where the employer, Arlington Cattle Company, received a significant fine reduction despite safety violations that led to the accident.

The practice of granting such reductions, termed "discounts on death," has been common for years, particularly for small businesses. However, recent developments suggest a departure from this trend. In a notable case involving Buildco LLC, the company faced full fines for safety violations resulting in a worker's death, signaling a departure from the previous practice of automatic reductions based on business size.

These changes come amid growing scrutiny over the fairness of fine reductions, especially in cases where workplace accidents result in fatalities. Covina Reveles, whose husband's death sparked attention to this issue, hopes that speaking out will lead to meaningful change and ensure that the value of workers' lives is not diminished by financial considerations. The evolving stance of state officials reflects a renewed commitment to prioritizing workplace safety and accountability over arbitrary reductions based on company size.

PANDEMICS
The Future of Pandemics. You Decide.

First Date Reaction GIF by GirlNightStand

The denial of petitions for workplace safety mandates in North Carolina, particularly during public health emergencies, places the onus of safety measures squarely on employers rather than imposing uniform mandates from government entities. This decision, spearheaded by State Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson, signals a significant shift in regulatory responsibility and could have far-reaching implications for businesses across various sectors.

For companies, especially those in industries prone to potential infectious disease exposures like agriculture, construction, and general industry, this decision could mean they retain greater autonomy in determining their workplace safety protocols. Instead of adhering to prescribed rules, they could have the flexibility to tailor safety measures to their specific operations and workforce needs.

While some businesses may welcome this autonomy as an opportunity to streamline safety measures and potentially reduce compliance burdens, others may find themselves grappling with the complexities of navigating evolving public health guidelines and ensuring the well-being of their employees.

Moreover, Dobson's decision reflects broader debates surrounding employer vaccination mandates and individual freedoms. Companies may face increased pressure from both internal and external stakeholders to take decisive action on workplace safety, balancing concerns for public health with considerations for employee rights and business interests.

Ultimately, the denial of these petitions underscores the critical role of companies in safeguarding employee health and safety during public health emergencies. It highlights the need for robust internal policies, proactive risk management strategies, and ongoing engagement with regulatory developments to navigate the evolving landscape of workplace safety regulations and responsibilities.
