Say Your Name Like a Surgeon

The key to safer workplaces might just start with something as simple as saying your name. In The Checklist Manifesto, Atul Gawande found that when surgical teams introduced themselves, complications dropped by 35%—all because people felt empowered to speak up when they spotted issues. This “activation phenomenon” shows that knowing everyone’s name creates a ripple effect: it encourages open communication and confidence to voice concerns, even in critical moments. For leaders, prioritizing introductions and fostering a culture where every voice matters could be the first step in preventing avoidable workplace risks.

Gamify Your Training

Retention rates for an 8-hour class is only 10-20% after one week. Longer sessions can lead to cognitive overload, making it harder for learners to retain information - why are we still doing this?

Training should be palatable and memorable - so why not give them something exciting to engage with? We're talking Gamification here people. Imagine turning your training into an engaging game of Family Feud or Jeopardy. Now you can!

Half of Workers Aren’t Reporting On-the-Job Injuries

Nearly half of workers seriously harmed at work in the past two years didn’t report it, according to a new report from Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Gallup interviewed around 147,000 workers in 142 countries, revealing that roughly 667 million workers have experienced significant job-related harm, with 49% keeping incidents under wraps.

Why the silence? Common reasons include fear of retaliation, lack of management response, and beliefs that pain is simply part of certain jobs. Safety training, or lack thereof, is also key—62% of workers (80% in agriculture) never received safety training. Those with training, however, were more likely to report injuries, underscoring the need for safety education in the workplace.

As National Safety Council’s Sarah Ischer puts it, fostering a secure environment isn’t just about minimizing risks; it’s about building a space where workers feel safe, supported, and engaged.
